Effect:
There's a vertical box on the stage, there's a silhouette of a girl inside drawn on the front side of it.
There are openings for her legs and hands in the box. David
dances with the girl on the stage, and then she enters the box, takes the position same as on the picture, her hands and feet appear in the openings. David puts the box horizontally and "cuts" it into 9 parts with special plates, the hand and the feet are still in the openings.
Then he and his assistant pull the parts of the box apart but you can still see the parts of the body, they are moving.
Then he puts the parts together, takes out the plates, turns over the box and puts it in the former position.
The next moment the girl gets out of it.
Secret of this trick: It's amazing, how David manages to make big volumes totally imperceptible in this trick. The illusion begins, when the girl gets inside the box. We see three openings; the moment she enters, she puts a false hand out of the upper opening and a false leg out of the lower opening but her real hand is in the middle opening.

Her real legs she puts not inside the box but in the leg, which holds the box, when it takes a vertical position. Look at pictures 2,3,4.
You can see the whole construction at picture #3; notice the design. All parts of the construction are colored black but some smaller bright metallic forms are attached to them. They look very bright against a black background and, as far as they are smaller, than the whole construction, we don't notice the black (real) contours and think, that the leg is very thin, the platform, where that leg is placed is thin also, and the circle is rather small. This is how David Copperfield makes big volumes imperceptible. Look at picture #4, it shows the hollow space inside the construction (red), beginning almost from the floor to the part of the cut box. As I've already said, in the beginning of the trick the girl gets into the box and puts her legs inside the leg, which holds the construction; she spends some time in there, bended forward (about 90 dgr), before David doesn't lift the construction, letting the girl unbend, put her legs in one line, get down a bit and take place inside the hollow space of the construction. Her position is uncomfortable and rather unpleasant but there's no other way. But it doesn't take that long, and when David puts the box in the former position, she gets out of it.
P.S. All this time we could see the girl's real hand in the middle opening. So she's the one, who's supposed to get our applause, not the great magician.
