Illusion:
The Death Saw
Effect: David lies down on the table, face down, the assistants chain his legs, body and hands to the table, and close him into the box. Above him there's a huge circular saw that begins to work and slowly goes down. David's got only one minute to free himself and get out of the box before the saw cuts him up. He doesn't make it, begins to fuss, and the saw cuts him right in the middle. In a couple of seconds he lifts up his head. Few more seconds his two assistants slide apart the table; on one part there are the legs, on the other - the body. Both parts are moved to each other; somebody from the audience shouts: "Move your legs!" David looks at his legs, and in a second they begin to move! Then he starts the device in the opposite way, the saw begins to circulate, parts come together, the box covers David and his legs, the next moment he stands up safe and sound…
Secret of the trick: David Copperfield is famous not only with his flights but also with this trick, he puts the legendary "Death saw" almost in every show. Now lets see, how this spectacular deception is done.
Attention! Take a close look at the table, the secret lies within it. The table seems rather thin at first but if you look closely, you'll see the following: the table itself is colored black, and if the whole table was black, we could see his real thickness, but there are bright metallic laths with smaller height, they create the illusion of thinness. When we look at this table, we judge about the thickness by the metallic sides but we ignore or even don't notice a few centimeters of black thickness left above and below. Then - David doesn't lie on the table itself, he lies on the low ground (with the same metallic laths on the sides).
The thickness of the table is about 20cm, and the thickness of the ground, where lies David - about 20-25cm. Total height is 40-45cm. Thus, there is a box formed under David about 45cm high (picture 2); it's hollow inside, and it's this very box, where David hides his legs. The position he takes is pretty uncomfortable, and as far as David isn't that lithe, we can see his hump. It's all clear about the body but what about the legs? It's all the same with the legs, only not David's legs but his assistants body hide in the box under the table; the assistant lies on the back and puts his legs into the openings above. So, the parts of the legs from the waistline to the knees are fake and from the knees to the feet are real; that's how he moves them (see the pictures in the end of the article).
There's one more thing to add: the place, where David is cut apart is some kind of an artificial addition to the body under the shirt
And where do the legs go in the end of the trick, when David gets up?
The answer is clear: the second person occupies both boxes (he just takes his legs off the table and puts them inside the box, where David's legs used to be).
So, Copperfield's succeeded again, and the audience, feeling a bit irritated, because of an obvious cheating, applaud to the great illusionist.
